DIRECT MARKETING

 

Direct Marketing is that system through which your firm communicates directly with the direct customer without intermediaries.
This system has been used so far in the industrial markets with few and specific customers and with highly specialized products. But in the last years this strategy has been adapted also in the consumer goods and services markets, above all thanks to new technologies.
In order to clarify the concept of direct marketing it is necessary to distinguish between direct Marketing and interactive Marketing.
The former refers specifically to the direct sale system, where the firm takes orders and sells directly to the customer residence. Thus the order is made from the comfort of your home and the goods are directly sent from the firm to the customer residence.
The latter refers instead to the interactive marketing, that is to say that the firm goal is to establish a direct communication flow with the potential customers, in order to create with them a lasting relationship. Thus this second meaning doesn’t rule out products sale in shops and consequently its introduction in a vertical marketing system.
The direct marketing development meant as the integration of those two meanings developed after the decrease of advertising impact through the mass media; this decrease changed the direct marketing characteristics with the development of new technologies. Now for the firm it is more expensive than the past to establish a contact with the customer. Furthermore, as we seen, also the customers purchase behaviours have been changed and the purchase itself is not more an enjoyment but it has to be optimized in terms of time and effort. This is the reason why, for example, electronic commerce is becoming the ideal purchase method for consumers.
The instruments used by direct marketing are: the personal sale, that is the more traditional method of industrial firms, the catalogue sale, the teleshopping, the telemarketing and the mailing or postal mail-order.
